THE JUBILEE
PROJECT

The Jubilee Project is an initiative of the Borden House to seek holistic transformation through community, housing, and worship.

ABOUT THE
INITIATIVE
.

Borden House is launching a new initiative called The Jubilee Project. This initiative is inspired by Leviticus 25:10 in the Bible:

"And you shall consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim freedom throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a Jubilee for you, and each of you shall return to his own property [that was sold to another because of poverty], and each of you shall return to his family [from whom he was separated by bondage]."

When Jesus started his ministry, he invoked the theme of Jubilee: he proclaimed that he had come to proclaim a Year of the Lord's favor, full of freedom and deliverance and transformation by God's power. In his life, Jesus restored relationships with God, mended relationships among people, and healed the sick. In other words, the Jubilee he brought included spiritual, relationship, and physical transformation.

We hope for that same power of Jubilee to take deeper root in New Haven.

We hope to cultivate community that is rich and full and diverse and beautiful, inspired by the kind of community Jesus created.

We hope to create spaces in our neighborhood where we can gather with neighbors and people from around the city to worship in a welcoming environment.

Many New Haven residents have called this city home for generations. Yet because of gentrification, they are being pushed out. For many, the dream of home ownership seems further away than ever before. Through this initiative, we hope to purchase homes in our neighborhood, repair them, and affordably sell them back to long term New Haven residents.

Jubilee got its start when our block experienced two tragic house fires. These fires displaced families who were unable to afford to repair the homes. The homes are now at risk of being bought by wealthy investors and transformed into expensive rental properties. In other words, gentrification is at our doorstep. The need is urgent and the time to act is now.

OUR THREE
PRIORITIES
.

Foster Christ-Centered Community

Jesus lived in community and the New Testament shows us that Jesus was constantly giving and receiving hospitality. We believe in Biblical community and have a proven track record of investing in this area.

Provide Affordable Home Ownership

For many long term New Haven residents, home ownership has never seemed more distant. We desire to purchase homes before they can be turned into expensive rental properties and sell them affordably to historical New Haven residents.

Gather People to Worship God

We have already seen God move in powerful ways through worship gatherings of neighbors and Christians from around the city. We desire to continue gathering the city together to worship Jesus Christ.

but to do justice, and to love kindness,
